What is pulmonary rehabilitation?
Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme supports people with chronic respiratory conditions—such as COPD, Interstitial Lung Disease, Chronic Asthma and Bronchiectasis—who experience breathlessness and reduced activity levels.
Through evidence-based exercise and education, the service improves functional capacity, builds confidence, and reduces the risk of hospital admission.
With a focus on long-term self-management, it empowers patients to better understand and manage their condition. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a key intervention in the NHS Long Term Plan, which identifies respiratory disease as a national clinical priority.
Real results that make a difference
This programme gives patients meaningful improvements in their physical ability, breathing symptoms, and mental health, showing just how effective pulmonary rehabilitation can be.

Patients walked 111 meters further on average
Over 80% exceeded the clinically important threshold for improvement. The average gain was 111.5m – a 50% increase from baseline.[1]

22% reduction in CAT scores
This 4.1 reduction in CAT score is more than double the MCID of 2.0, with 61% of patients achieving a meaningful improvement and better quality of life.[1]

33% drop in anxiety and depression symptoms
Patients with moderate or severe symptoms saw depression scores fall by 5.0 points and anxiety by 6.8 points – both well above clinical thresholds.[1]

Why choose Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a cost-effective intervention recommended by NICE and the British Thoracic Society. It focuses on tailored physical exercise and information that helps people to better understand and manage their condition/s and symptoms, including feeling short of breath.
Evidence shows that accessing pulmonary rehabilitation:
- Improves people’s ability to walk further
- Helps them feel less tired and breathless when carrying out day-to-day activities
- 90% of patients who complete a pulmonary rehabilitation programme have higher activity and exercise levels, and report an improved quality of life
- Support better self-management and reduction in exacerbations
- Reduce the numbers of acute and emergency admissions and reduction in primary care appointments
